Melbourne Research Scholarship (Fee Offset)
  • Full fee offset for up to two years for Masters by Research students

  • Full fee offset for up to four years for doctoral degree students

Melbourne Research Scholarship (Stipend)
  • Full fee offset with the same duration benefits as above

  • A fortnightly stipend at the rate of $38,500 per year (2025 full-time study rate) for up to two years for Masters by Research or up to 3.5 years for doctoral degrees

  • The stipend includes limited paid sick, parental, and partner leave and may be indexed annually

  • A one-off relocation allowance of $2,000 for students moving from other Australian states or territories, or $3,000 for students relocating from outside Australia

  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students requiring a student visa

Note: Domestic research students will automatically receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee offset) with their course offer.

To be considered for this scholarship, you must either:

  • Have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or

  • Be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne

Selection Process

The Melbourne Research Scholarship is awarded to students ranked highest by relevant selection panels based on:

  • Academic results from previous study

  • Research potential in their field of study

Additional factors that may be considered include:

  • Completion of a degree at the same level as the research course being applied for

  • Relevant professional experience

  • Refereed publications

  • Specialist medical qualifications

  • Composition of original music

How to Apply

One of the most attractive aspects of this scholarship is its automatic consideration process. Here's how it works:

  • If you have applied for a graduate research course by the application closing date, you do not need to submit a separate scholarship application

  • Within seven days of submitting your course application, you will receive confirmation that you are automatically being considered for a range of graduate research scholarships

However, if you fall into one of these categories, you will need to submit an online application form:

  • You have already received an offer for a graduate research course and deferred commencement to the following year

  • You are currently enrolled in a graduate research course for which you seek a scholarship

Notification of Outcomes

Domestic students will receive an offer for a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) as part of their course offer. Offers for Graduate Research Scholarships that provide a stipend and fee offset are made separately but around the same time course offers are made.

All scholarships are subject to the Graduate Research Scholarships Terms & Conditions (as amended). The scholarship is open for automatic consideration, meaning you don't need to apply separately – you'll be eligible for consideration after successfully submitting an application to study at the university.
