The US-UK Fulbright Commission's Postgraduate Awards fund master's degrees, PhDs and research at accredited universities in the United States. They are for UK citizens, not for students from other countries.

Applications for 2027-28 closed on May 5, 2026. In that round, applications opened in February, shortlisted candidates were interviewed on Zoom in August, and results came out in early September.

If you are not a UK citizen, apply through the Fulbright commission or US embassy in your own country, as the Commission advises.

The awards

The All Disciplines Award covers any master's or doctoral degree, or an independent research project, at any accredited US university. Partner awards include a journalism master's (Alistair Cooke), a film master's with BAFTA, and master's awards at The New School, American University, the University of Maryland School of Public Policy and the University of Florida.

What the awards offer

  • Funding packages, including fully funded awards

  • Sickness and accident cover

  • J-1 visa sponsorship and pre-departure support

  • Support in the US from the Institute of International Education (IIE)

  • Membership of a global alumni network of over 300,000 people

A separate Opportunity Fund can add enough to cover a two-year master's and living costs for selected students who cannot fund their studies otherwise, but only on the IIE placement track.

Who can apply

You must be a UK citizen with, or expecting, at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree; a 2:2 is considered only in exceptional cases with an extra form. Non-UK citizens settled in the UK may be considered in narrow cases, but not those on a student visa.

Dual US-UK citizens, US green card holders and people living in the US cannot apply, and applicants with little time in the US are preferred.

Two ways to apply

On the IIE placement track, an adviser helps successful candidates choose and apply to US universities, and the IIE covers admission costs. On the independent track, you apply to your chosen universities yourself and name them in your study objective.
