Nagoya City University (NCU) takes graduate students on the Japanese Government's MEXT Scholarship, which covers school fees, a monthly allowance and airfare.
The 2026 university recommendation round has closed. It opened in December 2025, results came in June and July, and scholars arrive from September 2026. NCU has not yet posted the next round.
What the scholarship covers
A monthly allowance of 143,000 yen for non-degree research students, 144,000 yen for master's and 145,000 yen for doctoral students

University recommendation: NCU screens applicants from its partner universities and recommends candidates to the Ministry of Education (MEXT). You must live outside Japan, be under 35 and be able to arrive before your programme starts.
Embassy recommendation: NCU also accepts MEXT scholars selected through Japanese embassies abroad.
Domestic selection: graduate students already enrolled at NCU and under 35 can be selected internally; they receive the allowance, a tuition exemption and a return ticket.
How the university recommendation works
Before applying, find an NCU professor willing to supervise you and discuss your application with them. Then complete the application form and a research plan and submit them to your supervisor by the deadline in the guidelines.
The graduate school and the university screen applications between January and March, and NCU applies to MEXT for the chosen candidates. Questions go to the International Affairs Office at ryugaku[at]sec.nagoya-cu.ac.jp.
