MEXT Scholarship Overview

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers prestigious scholarships to international students who wish to pursue graduate studies at Japanese universities. Nagoya City University (NCU) accepts applications for three main categories of the MEXT Scholarship program for research students.

MEXT Scholarship Categories

The MEXT Scholarship at Nagoya City University is available through three main pathways:

  • University Recommendation (Special Program) - For applicants applying to NCU's special program "Program to Conjoin Brain Science and Society"

  • University Recommendation (General Program) - For students from partner universities

  • Internal Selection - For privately-financed international students already enrolled at NCU

Scholarship Benefits

The MEXT Scholarship offers comprehensive financial support including:

  • Monthly Allowance:

    • Research students (non-degree): 143,000 JPY

    • Master's students: 144,000 JPY

    • Doctoral students: 145,000 JPY

  • Tuition Exemption: Examination, admission, and tuition fees are exempted

  • Travel Expenses: Round-trip air tickets provided

Eligibility Requirements

For University Recommendation categories, applicants must:

  • Not be residing in Japan at the time of application

  • Be able to arrive in Japan prior to the enrollment period

  • Be under 35 years of age

For Internal Selection, applicants must:

  • Already be enrolled in a graduate course at NCU

  • Be under 35 years of age

Nagoya City University has launched a special program called "Program to Conjoin Brain Science and Society" for the 2025 MEXT Scholarship.

Application Process

1. Find a supervisor at NCU from the provided list of supervisors in various graduate schools:

  • Graduate School of Medical Sciences

  • Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

  • Graduate School of Design and Architecture

  • Graduate School of Nursing

  • Graduate School of Science

2. After obtaining the supervisor's consensus, download and complete the required application forms.

3. Submit all completed application documents to your supervisor by the designated deadline.

Important Notes:

  • The International Affairs Office does not introduce supervisors to applicants

  • Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted

  • Application documents will not be returned after submission

University Recommendation (General Program) - 2026

For the General Program, NCU screens applications from students at partner universities and selects candidates to recommend to MEXT as research students.

The application timeline follows a similar schedule to the Special Program, with applications opening in November 2024 and successful candidates arriving in Japan from September 2025.

Applicants must first find a supervisor at NCU, obtain their consensus, and then submit all required application documents by the designated deadline.

Internal Selection for Privately-Financed International Students

Privately-financed international students already enrolled in NCU's graduate school can also apply to join the special education program "International Program to Conjoin Brain Science and Society."
