  • Demonstrate financial need (preference is given to applicants with family income less than USD 50,000 and individual income less than USD 25,000 per year)

Note: Volunteering or internship experience is not considered full-time professional work experience.

Application Process

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Step 2: Secure an Academic Supervisor

Contact a potential academic supervisor at Institute of Science Tokyo via email. Provide a self-introduction and letter of intent outlining your study plans. You must obtain the supervisor's consent before applying, as applications without faculty endorsement will not be accepted.

Important: Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by certified English translations from a public institution.

Step 4: Selection Process

Admission decisions are based on application documents, academic transcripts, and interviews (which may be conducted online). All applicants will receive notification of admission results by mid-July.

Step 5: Scholarship Results

After admission results are announced, the ADB must approve the scholarship selections. This may cause a delay in scholarship notification. Successful applicants will be asked to submit original income certificate documents at this stage.

Income Certificate Requirements

When preparing employment and income certificates, follow these guidelines:

  • Certificates must include company letterhead/logo and the name/title of the authorized signatory

  • Include employment start and end dates (if current employment is less than 2 years, submit certificates from previous employers)

  • Income certificates must show monthly or annual amounts (computer-generated documents without authorized signatures are not acceptable)

  • Single applicants must submit their parents' income certificates

  • Married applicants must submit their spouse's income certificate

  • Institute of Science Tokyo no longer accepts scholarship applications for April intake
