The Intra-Africa GENES II project has announced scholarship opportunities for African students seeking to pursue PhD and MSc programs in Plant breeding, Biotechnology, Biology, and related fields. This prestigious scholarship program aims to promote academic mobility across African universities while fostering expertise in critical scientific disciplines.

Scholarship Benefits

The GENES II scholarship provides comprehensive financial support to successful candidates:

  • PhD Students: Monthly stipend of €1,230 for a maximum duration of 36 months (degree-seeking mobility)

  • MSc Students: Monthly stipend of €890 for a maximum duration of 12 months (credit-seeking mobility)

Both stipends include travel costs to and from the host institution and settling allowances. Additionally, the host institutions will cover research costs, tuition fees, training expenses, conference participation (subject to approval by the supervision team), and insurance costs in accordance with EACEA guidelines.

Available Positions

For this first call, the GENES II project is offering:

  • 12 PhD positions

  • 16 MSc positions

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the GENES II scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a national and resident of an African country at the time of application

  • Be registered/admitted in or have obtained a degree from either:

    • Target Group 1: One of the HEIs included in the GENES II consortium (Ebonyi State University, University of Abomey-Calavi, Jimma University, Egerton University, North-West University, University of Zimbabwe)

    • Target Group 2: Another HEI not included in the GENES II consortium but established in an EACEA eligible country in Africa

  • Have sufficient knowledge of the language of courses in the host countries (French or English)

  • Meet the enrollment criteria of the university they wish to apply to

For MSc applicants, candidates must have completed the first two semesters of a Master of Science course in Plant breeding, Biotechnology, Biology, or related fields in their home country. They must provide first-year MSc recognition, academic transcripts, and proof of completing the coursework before proceeding with the scholarship.

For PhD applicants, candidates should hold an MSc degree in Plant breeding, Biotechnology, Biology, or related fields.

Students who have previously benefited from scholarship(s) under the previous Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme are eligible to apply for this current call.

Applicants may apply to any of the following host universities:

  • Ebonyi State University, Nigeria

  • University of Abomey-Calavi, Republic of Benin

  • Jimma University, Ethiopia

  • Egerton University, Kenya

  • North-West University, South Africa

  • University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe

  1. Completed scholarship application form

  2. Cover letter

  3. Student research proposal or detailed research concept note (for PhD and MSc)

  4. National ID or copy of passport data page

  5. Certificate of previous degree(s) or proof that the degree(s) has been completed

  6. All transcripts/academic records

  7. Proof of enrollment or eligibility for enrollment for MSc degree from home institution (for MSc applicants)

  8. Support letter from home HEIs (from an authority of the University, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Vice Dean, or Head of Department/School)

  9. Two recommendation letters

  10. Curriculum Vitae

  11. Certificate of English or French language skills (if any)

  12. Proof of socio-economic vulnerability (if relevant) attested by an authority of the home HEI

  13. Any other supporting documents
