GENES II is a European Union-funded Intra-Africa academic mobility project that gives scholarships to African students and staff to study and train in plant genomics at partner universities across the continent.
The latest call has closed. The fourth call, for MSc students, academic and administrative staff and trainees, had a deadline of August 12, 2026, according to the project website. No further call has been announced.
What the project is about
GENES II, in full Mobility for Plant Genomics Scholars to Accelerate Climate-Smart Adaptation Options and Food Security in Africa II, trains graduates to use genomic and digital technologies to develop crops that cope with climate change.
It is funded by the European Commission's Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and coordinated by Ebonyi State University in Nigeria.

Who the calls are for
Earlier calls were open to nationals and residents of African countries studying plant breeding, biotechnology, biology or related fields, who could move to one of the partner universities for a full PhD or part of an MSc. Each call sets out its own places, stipends, eligibility and documents.
